Rights Group Reports Rise in Attacks on Journalists and Rape Cases in July

Bangladesh's human rights situation remained a source of concern in July, with rights monitors recording increases in attacks on journalists, rape cases and the recovery of unidentified bodies, according to a monthly report by the Manabadhikar Shongskriti Foundation (MSF).

Key findings

In its June-July 2026 report, MSF said several indicators had worsened compared with the previous month, even as some other measures showed slight improvement. The organisation said mob violence, political violence and violence against women remained pressing national concerns.

Calls for accountability

Rights advocates urged law enforcement agencies to strengthen investigations and ensure accountability for perpetrators, warning that impunity risked further eroding public safety and press freedom.

The report comes amid a tense political climate ahead of anticipated national elections, with civil society groups warning that rising violence could further complicate an already fragile transition. MSF called on the interim administration and political parties to prioritise protection of vulnerable groups and media workers in the coming months.

Officials from the home ministry have not yet issued a detailed public response to the report, though a spokesperson said authorities take all complaints of violence seriously and are reviewing the findings.
