The Tampa Bay Rays acquired right-handed starter Freddy Peralta from the New York Mets on Sunday, giving the first-place club a boost to its rotation ahead of the stretch run, according to reports confirmed by both organisations.

A struggling Mets season

Peralta, a two-time All-Star who can become a free agent this fall, had been considered a disappointment for a Mets team that fell out of playoff contention this season, according to team sources.

In return, the Mets received three minor-league players, continuing a broader rebuild of the farm system as the front office looks ahead to next season.

Deadline dominoes

The move was one of several rotation-altering trades completed within a 24-hour window, alongside the Dodgers' acquisition of Tarik Skubal and the Mariners' trade of Luis Castillo.

Rays management said Peralta is expected to slot into the middle of the rotation immediately, giving the team another proven arm for the postseason push.

The Mets, meanwhile, signalled they would continue to evaluate their roster ahead of the offseason, according to a statement from the club.
