Bangladesh's Floating Farms: An Ancient Agricultural Answer to a Changing Climate
For centuries, farmers in southern Bangladesh have built floating gardens on water hyacinth, a practice now seen as a model for climate resilience.

Across the vast, waterlogged floodplains of southern Bangladesh, the monsoon transforms the landscape into an inland sea. For up to half the year, homes and roads become islands, and farmland vanishes beneath the rising waters. Yet in this liquid world, a unique form of agriculture thrives. Here, in districts like Pirojpur, Barishal, and Gopalganj, farmers construct buoyant vegetable gardens that float atop the water. Known locally as 'dhap' or 'baira', these ingenious floating farms represent a centuries-old tradition of turning an environmental challenge into an agricultural opportunity.
An Ingenuity Born of Necessity
The practice of floating agriculture is deeply rooted in the geography of the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta. This low-lying region is defined by its relationship with water, with countless rivers and canals crisscrossing the land. During the monsoon season, prolonged inundation makes conventional, soil-based farming impossible. Faced with this recurring reality, communities generations ago developed a method to continue cultivation even when their fields were submerged. The system is a testament to indigenous knowledge, passed down through families as a vital survival strategy.
This traditional method allows for food and income generation during the lean monsoon months, a period when other forms of employment are scarce. It is an agricultural system that does not fight the water but rather adapts to its presence, utilising the very aquatic weeds that proliferate during the floods as its primary building block. This harmony with the natural flood cycle is what has allowed the practice to endure for what historians believe could be several hundred years.
The Art of Building on Water
The construction of a 'dhap' is a laborious, organic process that begins with the collection of the invasive water hyacinth, or 'kochuripana'. Farmers in small boats navigate the swollen waterways, gathering enormous quantities of the weed and piling it into a dense, rectangular raft. This base layer, often several feet thick, provides the primary buoyancy for the structure. The beds can range significantly in size, with some stretching over 50 feet long and five to six feet wide, forming green platforms on the brown water.
Upon this hyacinth foundation, successive layers of other aquatic plants and organic matter are added. A layer of decomposed weeds, such as 'topapana' and 'dulali lata', is spread to create a composting medium. The final planting surface is a carefully prepared mixture of peat-like decomposed weeds and cow dung, which forms a nutrient-rich, soil-less bed for seedlings. The entire structure is anchored in place with bamboo poles ('bamboos') pushed into the muddy bottom, allowing the bed to rise and fall with changing water levels.
These floating beds are not permanent. Over a period of several months, the organic raft slowly decomposes from the bottom up, continually releasing nutrients to the plants above. After the growing season, typically lasting five to six months, the remnants of the 'dhap' are dismantled. The composted material, rich in organic matter, is then collected and used as a potent fertiliser for the winter crops that are planted once the floodwaters have receded from the mainland fields.
The Seedling Economy
While some vegetables are grown to maturity on the floating beds for local consumption, the primary economic engine of this agricultural system is the production of seedlings. The 'dhap' acts as a massive nursery, producing millions of saplings of various winter vegetables. Farmers meticulously plant seeds in small balls of prepared organic matter, which are then placed on the floating beds to germinate and grow.
The timing is critical. As the monsoon subsides, farmers on the mainland find their fields emerging from the water, ready for cultivation. The 'dhap' farmers, having given their seedlings a head start of several weeks, are perfectly positioned to supply them. The most commonly grown seedlings include those for tomatoes, gourds, cauliflower, cabbage, eggplant, and chillies. This makes the floating gardens an indispensable part of the regional agricultural supply chain, ensuring that mainland farms can be planted as soon as the land is ready.
This activity culminates in bustling seedling markets that spring up along riverbanks and in towns like Nazirpur in Pirojpur. Farmers transport their fragile produce by boat, selling to middlemen and landowners who buy in bulk. Traders in these markets report that a single seedling may sell for just a few taka, but the sheer volume of sales provides a significant source of income for hundreds of families in the region, turning a seasonal challenge into a profitable enterprise.
A Globally Important Heritage
In recognition of its unique and sustainable character, the floating gardens practice was designated as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS) by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This prestigious acknowledgement highlights the system not as a relic of the past, but as a living, dynamic example of agricultural ingenuity that promotes food security, biodiversity, and local economic resilience. The GIAHS status aims to support the conservation and adaptive management of this traditional system.
The system meets the core criteria for GIAHS recognition by providing a range of social, economic, and environmental benefits. It is a community-managed system that preserves traditional ecological knowledge and strengthens the social fabric. By turning a problematic invasive weed into a productive resource, it also demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of ecosystem management.

What was once a localised solution for seasonal waterlogging is now being examined by scientists and development experts as a powerful, proven strategy for climate adaptation. It offers a tangible solution for agricultural production in areas where conventional farming is becoming increasingly untenable.
Researchers are studying the nutrient cycles, productivity, and economic viability of the 'dhap' system to understand how it might be improved and replicated. The potential to expand this practice to other flood-prone regions, both within Bangladesh and in other parts of the world, is significant. Projects by government agencies and non-governmental organisations are exploring ways to refine the techniques, introduce a wider variety of crops, and improve market linkages for the farmers.
Despite its potential, the practice faces challenges. The availability of water hyacinth can be threatened by large-scale clearance projects, and water pollution from industrial and agricultural runoff can impact the health of the aquatic ecosystem on which the farms depend. Ensuring that this ancient practice can adapt and thrive in the 21st century will require a concerted effort to protect the local environment and support the communities who are the custodians of this remarkable agricultural heritage.
