Standards

Editorial Standards & Ethics

The rules our reporters and editors work to, published so readers can hold us to them.

Accuracy and verification

Claims are checked against primary documents, named sources or first-hand observation before publication. Where a fact cannot be verified, we say so in the story.

Sourcing

We prefer named sources. Anonymity is granted only where a source faces real risk, and the reason is explained to readers. Editors always know a source's identity.

Conflicts of interest

Staff disclose financial holdings, political affiliations and family ties relevant to their beat, and recuse themselves where a conflict exists. Gifts of value are declined.

AI use

Generative tools may assist with transcription, translation and research. No story is published without human reporting, editing and fact-checking. Illustrative imagery created with AI is labelled as such.
